In a Silent Way is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Miles Davis, released on July 30, 1969, on Columbia Records. Produced by Teo Macero, the album was recorded in one session date on February 18, 1969, at CBS 30th Street Studio in New York City.
Listening to Miles Davis' originally released version of In a Silent Way in light of the complete sessions released by Sony in 2001 (Columbia Legacy 65362) reveals just how strategic and dramatic a studio construction it was. If one listens to Joe Zawinul's original version of "In a Silent Way," it comes across as almost a folk song with a very pronounced melody. The version Miles Davis and Teo Macero assembled from the recording session in July of 1968 is anything but. There is no melody, not even a melodic frame
In a Silent Way. Miles Davis. Released July 30, 1969. In A Silent Way is Davis' less acclaimed jazz-rock fusion counterpart to Bitches Brew. The album abandons the smooth sound of swing and vintage jazz sounds for an atmospheric, space themed tone. It’s known as the beginning of the electronic era for Miles, and his change in approach would influence jazz for decades to come. Although rock enthusiasts at first criticized the use of the genre, the album would later be regarded warmly by critics. In A Silent Way is split into four pieces and two tracks, each one transitioning as a different live piece

With one of the most stellar lineups ever, Miles Davis' In a Silent Way can be read as the calm before the storm that is his subsequent masterpiece, Bitches Brew. While many listeners point out the thunderous facet of the jazz master's electric phase (rightly so), In a Silent Way is an interesting, but essential exception.
