When Johnny Mercer was just 20, at the beginning of the Great Depression, he bravely ventured to live and work in New York City from Savannah, trying to make it as an actor, singer, and maybe a lyricist. He never became an actor of note, he was a fairly successful singer having sung with the Benny Goodman and Bob Crosby orchestras on radio and having a radio show of his own, but as a lyricist, he wowed the musical world at a time when there was enormous competition from iconic lyricists like Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter. Phillip Furia has done a masterful job of capturing the tortured soul of Johnny Mercer.
