Christopher John Cornell (né Boyle; July 20, 1964 – May 18, 2017) was an American musician, singer and songwriter. He was best known as the lead vocalist for the rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. Cornell was also known for his numerous solo works and soundtrack contributions since 1991, and as the founder and frontman for Temple of the Dog, the one-off tribute band dedicated to his late friend Andrew Wood.

Audioslave is the debut studio album by American rock supergroup Audioslave. It was released on November 15, 2002, by Epic Records and Interscope Records. The album features the hit singles "Cochise", "Show Me How to Live", "What You Are", "Like a Stone", and "I Am the Highway". The album was later certified 3x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in the United States. Like a Stone" was nominated for a 2004 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.

Tankian attests to Cornell’s sobriety in recent weeks: At the Elton John party, Cornell joined in a champagne toast – raising his glass – but did not drink. The surviving members of Soundgarden declined to speak for this story.

Chris Cornell, Singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, Dies at 52. 5/18/2017 by Joe Lynch. Soundgarden debuted with the 1987 EP Screaming Life on Sub Pop Records, which was followed by the 1988 EP Fopp prior to the band's full-length 1988 debut album, Ultramega OK, an essential touchstone in the codification of the grunge genre. 1989's major-label debut for A&M Records, Louder Than Love, became their first album to chart on the Billboard 200, and they broke through commercially with 1991's Badmotorfinger, which produced the singles "Jesus Christ Pose," "Rusty Cage" and "Outshined" (videos for the latter two songs got heavy MTV play).

Soundgarden’s next album, Superunknown (1994), duly topped the US chart (and reached No 4 in the UK), and went on to sell 5m copies in the States alone. After extensive international touring, Soundgarden started work on their fifth album, Down on the Upside, though Cornell’s desire to lighten the group’s dark, metallic sound with acoustic instruments triggered arguments with his bandmates. Over the next five years they recorded three albums, Audioslave (2002), Out of Exile (2005) and Revelations (2006). Cornell quit Audioslave in early 2007. This was a significant period in his career, since he had been suffering from problems with drug and alcohol abuse during his later years with Soundgarden, and had made a strenuous effort to overcome them. It was really hard to recover from, just mentally, he recalled.

Cornell calls Superunknown, Soundgarden's most commercially successful album (thanks to the modern-rock smash "Black Hole Sun"), a product of the band's "White Album period," in which the members were writing more on their own and experimenting with new sounds and ideas. 'Black Hole Sun' was a hit song in a way that we had never experienced and wouldn't experience again as Soundgarden. Audioslave - Audioslave (Epic, 2002). Cornell's current band formed when guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk - all avowed Soundgarden fans - decided they wanted to play with Cornell following the departure of frontman Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine. Proof that Audioslave wasn't the one-off project many observers had taken it for, Out of Exile saw the relationship between Cornell and his new bandmates deepen and intensify.

The voice of a generation, an artist for all time. 1988 – Though the band is the first of the Seattle grunge acts to generate major label interest, in 1988 they sign to the lesser known SST Records to release debut album Ultramega OK. 1989 – The band release their first album for a major label, Louder than Love on A&M Records. Bassist Yamamoto leaves the band to return to college. Jason Everman, formerly of Nirvana, joins the band briefly.
