Their next album, Gimme Fiction, was released in May 2005, and debuted at number 44 on the Billboard 200, selling more than 160,000 copies. Spoon’s Britt Daniel collaborated with Brian Reitzell to compose and arrange the soundtrack for the 2006 film Stranger than Fiction. On March 17, 2017 Spoon released their ninth studio album Hot Thoughts on Matador Records, their first on the label since their 1996 debut. In April 2019, the band made the news via Democratic presidential nominee Pete Buttigieg, who was filmed playing the band's song "The Way We Get By" on piano before an event by his spokesperson, Lis Smith.
The always experimental, often exceptional, Spoon return with their 5th album, GIMME FICTION. Whether upbeat or downbeat, the songs have the rhythm of a metronome, like a funky two-step shuffle, back and forth and back and forth. It’s a comfortable pattern to lose yourself in when blanketed by a variety of instruments and sound effects. A bed Spoon fans are familiar with.
Gimme Fiction is Spoon's loosest, most eclectic effort yet. While still sounding like themselves, the Austin-based band manages to evoke a number of other artists on their fifth full-length. On proto-glam opener "The Beast and Dragon, Adored," Britt Daniels channels the David Bowie of The Man Who Sold the World.
Spoon’s latest effort, Gimme Fiction, is smack dab in the middle of the two, tense and terse, albeit more epic-leaning in parts and slightly more grandiose. Unsurprisingly, it’s yet another great Spoon record. Those who like Spoon already will take to this record easily, though there’s more to it than that. Those expecting the same raw garage-y sounds of Kill the Moonlight will be caught off guard. This isn’t to say that it’s more like Girls Can Tell either. And it pretty much doesn’t sound anything like Telephono or A Series of Sneaks . Gimme Fiction is easily one of Spoon’s most adventurous records, though their progression has been a constant in their career. And in typical fashion, every note is in its right place, no more or less dressed up than it needs to be. And that’s exactly what’s so great about it.

The album's first three tracks show that Spoon can make music that's intricate and rousing at the same time: "The Beast and Dragon, Adored" is a slow-building preface, mentioning later song titles and introducing Gimme Fiction's big, brooding sound
