Mumps, etc. is an often unlistenably solipsistic, lazy album from a band that was often excellent. But when really getting to the bottom of why Mumps, etc. often sounds like it wasn't subject to outside QC, it isn't so much about Wolf's lyrical inscrutability but rather that long stretches of the record are just really fucking hard to listen to. Musically, it's perfectly fine and a logical dovetailing of Alopecia's sharp hybrid of hip-hop and indie rock with Eskimo Snow's forays into post-rock and folk, if maybe sidling a little too close to the sort of Danger Mouse-style pop-hop it knows it can't be.

Yoni Wolf's WHY? will put out a new full length, the very unfortunately titled Mumps, et. on October 9 through Anticon in the . and October 8 through City Slang in Europe. In the meanwhile, they'll also release a new EP called Sod in the Seed, also through Anticon/City Slang, on August 14 in the . and August 13 in Europe, and they'll kick off a big tour. Listen to the title track from that EP above, and watch a video of the cover shoot for the new album below. That's the cover, above

Written by Adrian Bloxham21 September, 2012. Why? – Mumps etc (City Slang) CD, DL, LP Released 8 October 2012. A record for an indie generation Why?’s long player Mumps etc blends indie rock and rap for a backdrop to his everyday stories. It’s a mash up of indie rock feel and dry, nasal rap. The songs are built on top of subtle beats, strange percussion sounds, strings and piano. But the beats aren’t why you listen to Why? You listen to Why? for the raps, the conscious storytelling and awkward confessions

Why? Mumps, Etc. ‎ (CD, Album).

Beats Per Minute (formerly One Thirty BPM). 78. Mumps takes a little while to sink in in a different way to previous albums.

Worrying about oversharing has never been Californian rapper and Anticon co-founder Yoni Wolf’s bag. He takes pleasure from overstepping the line, and list. His fifth album ‘Mumps, Etc’ continues this approach, as it critically casts an eye over Wolf’s public persona on ‘Waterlines’ and dedicates a track to an unwell fan in ‘Kevin’s Cancer’. It’s this final track that sums up the ongoing uneasiness in Wolf’s work as, presumably while half-smiling, he sings: I know with no uncertainty that I’m uncertain and I don’t know.

It leaves Mumps Etc. as an album on which it’s very hard to pledge your allegiance wholeheartedly to any single track, and one where the thought of listening to it cover to cover only to find the hidden gems begins to seem more like a chore with every spin. But for whatever music comes next, it sure would be nice for them to find a way to express these entirely valid personal concerns in a way that was more universally relatable.
