Mica Levi's work with Micachu & the Shapes is often maximalist in the best possible way, brimming over with ideas and sounds. While the band's collaboration with the London Sinfonietta, which resulted in 2011's Chopped & Screwed, nodded to her classical training (including her studies at Guildhall School of Music and Drama), the masterful restraint she displays on her first solo project, and first score, is a welcome surprise. Levi's inspirations are classical and classic, and the way she combines minimalism and the essentials of horror/suspense scores modernizes both.

collective, comprised of Levi, Marc Pell and Raisa Khan (the latter two are of The Shapes), whom you may know from Basic Space remix. Yet, I’ll admit that I have not heard Levi’s solo work, particularly as striking as Under The Skin OST, which was a brand new territory for the British artist, flawlessly executed, if I may add, to my delight.

In 2014, Levi branched out into film composing, creating the score for the Jonathan Glazer film Under the Skin. Her work was widely praised and Levi received a European Film Award for Best Composer and a BAFTA Award for Best Film Music nomination  . Their debut album, Jewellery, produced with influential electronic musician Matthew Herbert, was recorded around Mica's composition studies at Guildhall School. Advance copies of the record reached the press in early 2009, and generated positive feedback. In the wake of this growing buzz, Micachu and the Shapes were signed to Rough Trade, who released Jewellery on 9 March 2009.
