Roddis Franklin Drake (October 8, 1932 – July 29, 1988) professionally known as Pete Drake, was a Nashville-based American record producer and pedal steel guitar player. One of the most sought-after backup musicians of the 1960s, Drake played on such hits as Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden", Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors"' Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay"' and Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man".
Pete Drake – Steel Away. Label: Canaan Records – CA-4640-LP. A better record than the other Pete Drake LP in my collection, "The Talking Steel Guitar", producer Marvin Norcross keeps Pete under control, letting him "talk" on some (about half), but not all, of the cuts. On the best tracks on the LP, "When They Ring Those Golden Bells", and "In The Garden", Pete refrains from "talking", and the Guys take a break, although the vocal backing by The Four Guys is unobtrusive on the other cuts, and Pete's steel playing is very smooth and sweet on the entire record

Country Steel Guitar. Talking Steel & Singing Strings. Talking Steel Guitar.
Talking Steel Guitar.
Format: Audio CDVerified Purchase. I highly recommend this album if you can find it-for both its listening and collectors value. I would also recommend the group's follow-up, when they all moved to the big city in 1999, "This Is What You Get," featuring some of the most solid horn work in popular music anywhere. 3 people found this helpful.
