In the early-to-mid '60s Robin Williamson & Clive Palmer performed as a duo delivering old timey fiddle and banjo arrangements of Scottish and Irish songs. Later that decade Williamson became a singer, musician and composer with the Incredible String Band, and founded the Merry Band in the late '70s. He was also a published poet, novelist, teacher, actor and a luminary in the Bardic Revival. The 1999 album AT THE PURE FOUNTAIN is the product of their first reunion in over 30 years. The material is in essence what they performed pre-ISB although they are joined by other musicians on some of the tracks. Williamson and Palmer have made a very personal selection of 16 (largely traditional) songs and tunes and their affection for them shines through from start to finish.

Clive Harold Palmer (14 May 1943 – 23 November 2014) was an English folk musician and banjoist, best known as a founding member of the Incredible String Band. After recording the first ISB album, The Incredible String Band with Williamson, Heron and producer Joe Boyd, Palmer travelled to India, where he played on national television, and Afghanistan. On his return, he decided not to rejoin the increasingly successful duo. Instead, he recorded an album of banjo music, Banjoland, which remained unreleased until 2005. 1999: At the Pure Fountain (with Robin Williamson). 2004: All Roads Lead To Land. 2004: Sands of Time – Unique Gravity. 2008: The Land of No Return – Quadrant Records. 2011: Along The Enchanted Way (The Clive Palmer Band). 2011: Live at the Acorn (The Clive Palmer Band).

In 1999, Palmer reunited with fellow Incredible String Band founder Robin Williamson to tour the United Kingdom and record two duo albums: At the Pure Fountain and Just Like the Ivy. It marked the first time in more than three decades that the two musicians collaborated. Palmer and Williamson first came together during the British folk revival of the early '60s. Soon after the album's release, Palmer left the group and moved to India. Palmer formed the Famous Jug Band with vocalist Jill Johnson, guitarist Pete Berryman, and jug player Henry Bartlett. The sole album by the group, Sunshine Possibilities, was released in 1969. A year later, Palmer formed Clive's Original Band with banjo player John Bidwell and percussionist Mick Bennett.
