INSTRUMENTATION: solo violin, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons and optional contrabassoon, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, optional tuba, timpani, and strings. DURATION: About 45 mins. But other tasks intervened, and Elgar found himself unable to devote any concentrated attention on his concerto until April 1909, when his wife inscribed in her diary that E. possessed with his music for the Vl. Concerto.

Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto was first recorded complete in 1929. Truncated versions had been recorded in 1916 using the acoustic recording process, the technical limitations of which necessitated drastic rearrangement of the score. Electrical recording, introduced in the 1920s, gave a greatly improved dynamic range and realism, and the two leading English record companies, Columbia and His Master's Voice (HMV) both made recordings of the concerto that remain in the catalogue

Edward Elgar's Salut d'amour is something of an oddity amongst nineteenth century salon music tidbits. Whereas most such pieces were originally composed for piano solo and then rearranged, usually by persons other than the composer, for all kinds of other instrumental combinations, Salut d'amour was first a piece for violin and piano and only later rearranged for piano solo. But, as it was Elgar himself who did the rearranging (and also the orchestration when it came time to make a version for the symphony hall), there is interest in this second-thought piano version that might.
