The Auvergne in the very heart of France, is one of the country's hidden destinations, for long kept apart from the rest of the country by its mountains, forests and wild countryside. Today it remains a region still largely untouched. About the Auvergne Region of France
Auvergne is a former administrative region of France, comprising the four departments of Allier, Puy-de-Dôme, Cantal and Haute-Loire. Since 1 January 2016, it has been part of the new region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The administrative region of Auvergne is larger than the historical province of Auvergne, one of the seven counties of Occitania, and includes provinces and areas that historically were not part of Auvergne.

Auvergne is one of the oldest populated regions of Europe. It is also well known for its extinguished volcanoes. Its mountains offer wonderful ski slopes in the winter and superb hiking grounds in the summer. This region is also the place of birth of Marguerite de Valois, countess of Auvergne, better known as the Queen Margot. During the XVIIth century, Louis XIII obliged Clermont and Monferrand, to become a single town. Still today, it is probably the only town in France to have one (rien ici) Mayor for two Town Halls
