Sleepy John Estes wasn't a great singer, and he was a barely passable guitarist, and yet he managed to sustain an intermittent career in the blues for over 50 years. He was able to do that because he was an amazingly subtle songwriter, with a clear grasp of characterization, location, and metaphor, traits not usually associated with the country blues.

This song is by Sleepy John Estes and appears on the album Stone Blind Blues (1999). Now, I been well-warned and I didn't take heed in timeNow, I been well-warned, didn't take heed in timeNow, I been well-warneded, I didn't take heed in timeI done lost my health and gone stone blind. Now I'm 'ant to know your friends when you get downNow I want to know your friends, you get downNow I want to know your friends, you get downThey be always askin' 'bout you, don't never come around.

John Adams Estes (January 25, 1899 or 1900 – June 5, 1977), known as Sleepy John Estes, was an American blues guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. Estes was born in Ripley, Lauderdale County, Tennessee, either in 1899 (the date on his gravestone) or 1900 (the date on his World War I draft card).

He sounded so much like an old man, even on his early records, that blues revivalists reportedly delayed looking for him because they assumed he would have to be long dead, and because fellow musician Big Bill Broonzy had written that Estes had died. By the time he was tracked down, by Robert G. Koester and Samuel B. Charters in 1962, he had become completely blind and was living in abject poverty. He resumed touring and recording, though his later records are generally considered less interesting than his pre-war output. En Grupos: The Delta Boys, Yank Rachell And His Tennessee Jug-Busters
