**** recommended. While this focuses on covers of songs made famous by others, these Del Shannon versions come as a breath of fresh air, the renditions remaining quite faithful yet delivered in Shannon's signature style. Some of the little changes to the originals make a big difference, mostly because of Shannon's delivery but also because of decisions such as making the garage-guitar bridge in Lou Christie's "Lighnin' Strikes" more pronounced. This also offers three Del Shannon originals that fit into the power-pop vibe of the album and keep this set from just being a running-through-the-hot-hits album. This features a full and rich Snuff Garrett production with arrangements by Leon Russell and Nick DeCaro, and while they push the production at times, this is clearly connected with the era before Sgt. Pepper rather than the excessive world after, the sound so much a part of that transitional sound of 1966, with a greaser-grin innocence and an end-of-an era essence. All Shannon fans will likely want to hear the originals: "For a Little While," Never Thought I Could," and "Hey, Little Star," all three belonging on a Del Shannon anthology. Anyone with love for that pre-summer-of-love 1960s sound should give this album a spin.-- winch (Winch Records)
