an (stylised as an) is the third studio album by British electronic music group Underworld, released in the UK on Junior Boy's Own on 24 January 1994. It was the first Underworld album after the 1980s version of the band had made the transition from synthpop to techno and progressive house and is also the first album to feature Darren Emerson as a band member, ushering in the "MK2" phase of the band, which continued until Emerson's departure in 2001.

The path Underworld took to get to an, their extraordinary first album in the second phase of the band, was full of dashed hopes and improbable left turns. Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, to this day the nucleus of the band, were previously known for being in the synth inflected new wave band Freur, whose Doot-Doot was a minor hit in 1983. A couple of albums as Underworld followed, until that phase of the band flopped quietly to a close after a 1989 North American tour supporting Eurythmics.

an is the third album by Underworld, released in the UK on Junior Boy's Own on 24 January 1994. I Love You" was inspired by walking around Greenwich Village in New York City.

In January ‘94, Rick Smith, Darren Emerson & Karl Hyde released their debut album – an – on independent label Junior Boy’s Own. Up to that point, the three-piece were seen as something of a square peg. They crafted songs from transcendent dance music. Can't understand how why why why was excluded from this edition.

deathwish7 Can't understand how why why why was excluded from this edition. Maybe because it was already given as bonus track on "1992-2012 The Anthology" a couple of years earlier...

Agree with all the glowing reviews of this pressing. I am hearing nuances and elements I've never heard on my ripped CDs or on high-def streaming from Tidal, and I have listened to this album hundreds of times. Definitely agree on using MoFi sleeves or something better than the cardboard sleeves provided. But this music comes to life on vinyl unlike digital. A must-have version of classic electronica for any collection.

Lovely record. The sound of this reedition is very satisfying."Cowgirl" is one of these tracks to be lost in. Just empty your head, and then let's get entertained by these glorious melodies. A masterpiece from the 90s, though the 8 other tracks are also at least very good, and each one offers a different atmosphere, from the solid beats of "Skyscraper" to the relaxing cruise offered by "River Of Bass".I would say that this is techno, but used with a minimalistic manner. There aren't savage booms often pictured when referring to techno (like the "Confusion" remix of Pump Panel). The closest albums that come to my mind are "Six Wheels On My Wagon" from Fluke for the housey side and "Accidentally Classic" from Freddy Fresh for this dark and minimal atmosphere.

My copy has started to disc rot, trouble ripping the last track. Thanks PDO.

I bought this the week it came out. 14 years later and it is still so damn good
Kerry
Haha, yea, was thinking the same. He also bought Bob Dylan's "Blood On The Tracks" the day it came out, in 1999. ;)
Celore
It came out in 1994 and you post this in 2017. Do the math ;-)
Kriau
It doesn't get much better than this. The sound is outstanding!

I see other reviews complain about the lack of some of the other songs that they released during the era, but I can tolerate these exclusions as what was included is quality stuff which gives insight into what one of the bigger 1990's Electronic acts was doing at the time. "The Live Jam Kyme Rd" CD is one which is especially worth looking at.

i second the previous comment: sound quality is amazing. but there is a but: the vinyl are housed in glossy paper sleeves, this means that it is almost impossible not to scratch them. i suggest to use antistatic sleeves.

Wtf, i mean is this for real, no Spoon Deep?! How is this possible?! So not even 5 freakin cds are enough to feature one of the best tracks? Surely having 7 (seven) versions of Dark & Long is more important?! Beyond unbelieveable.
Walianirv
Agree with you!!! Fav from them and their best for sure!!!

Actually, Spoon Deep is a remix of Spoonman - albeit one that got put on the Dark & Long EP. There are loads of missing tracks from the era that just wouldn't fit without an extra disc or two - Why Why Why, The Hump (Groove Without a Doubt), ME (FM Mix), 215 Miles, Dark Hard, Cowgirl (Winjer Mix), Big Mouth, the various versions of Minniapolis, Dirty Epic (Jed the Fish Edit), etc. The box is slightly infuriating in that respect - it's too hefty for a casual fan, yet the singles & b-sides tracklist isn't complete enough for the completist who wants to replace their singles or at least have the whole set of them remastered. I'd have much preferred another disc of unreleased pieces than just doubling up half the tracks from the CD singles.
Runeterror
You complain about 7 versions of Dark & Long, but Spoon Deep is also a remix/variation of that same track :) So is "215 Miles" which is also missing from this release, unfortunately... I guess they simply didn't have enough space for all the tracks from that era. They were really productive back then and many tracks were 10-20 minute opuses.
Wnex
Maybe Underworld did not have the rights to this song? Or maybe the master tapes got lost?

This sounds absolutely amazing on vinyl, great job Universal!

Excellent sounding blu ray pure audio. I wouldn't hesitate getting this HD recording!

One of the seminal techno albums from the 90s is back, sporting an all new remaster and featuring a variety of format options including BluRay (!), CD, 2xCD, 2xLP and 5xCD box set. I sprang for this 2 CD Deluxe Edition, because as much as I love Underworld, I really don't need to spend $100 to have 5 CDs of various versions and outtakes from this time period. I'm happy to say this Deluxe Edition is excellent, for a variety of reasons. The extra content on disc 2 is great, even though we've heard a few of these tracks before. But I personally hadn't heard Eclipse or the last 3 tracks, all of which are solid. Then there's the actual presentation - very nice, thick, glossy digipack with the trademark Underworld splotchy graphic design. Looks good on the shelf. And finally, and most important, the quality of the remaster is superb. Unlike many "mastering engineers" who simply run the master track of a song through a dynamics processor or limiter and brick the volume and EQ bands, this master is much more subtle, and sounds so much like the original pressing it's not even funny - but with the added bonus of having stronger volume, much deeper bass, more fleshed out mids and a smooth, silky high end. Karl's vocals cut through as you'd imagine they should, and everything is tight and balanced throughout the mix. There is no exaggeration on any element. River of Bass has a somewhat disproportionately heavy low end, but that was true in the original recording as well. All in all I am exceedingly happy that Underworld and Universal did the mastering job right. Both techno and audio enthusiasts (usually the same thing!) will appreciate this version.

The book is poorly done.

Cowgirl.WAV seems to be silent after 5:45.. anyone else noticed?

They fixed it. Just re-download the zip file.

Is the extra stuff any good?
Ytli
Thanks for the reply. Good to hear that it will be worth buying in the end. Thanks again!! :)
Faebei
well, I would say mostly yes. Disc 4 seems to have all the unreleased mixes; Tracks 4-06, 4-08 & 4-09 are really good. The mix on disc 5 is superb imho. Nice to have Eclipse (on disc 2) on cd, can't understand why all mixes of Dark & Long are included but not the best mix which is the Spoon Deep Mix. The book is rather disappointing for me. All in all a great package.

Review will come later but... why no 215 miles :_(
Eyalanev
215 Miles and Thing In A Book are different, distinct mixes.

Is the extra stuff any good?
Fenrikasa
I'm pretty sure that 215 Miles is the same as Thing In A Book. Give it a try!
Oparae
I would guess that it's because 215 miles is 20 minutes long and there wasn't room
