Like most of the Rough Guide series, this CD takes a well-rounded, all-encompassing look at the music of a particular region, but The Rough Guide to the Music of Senegal & Gambia stands out due in large part to the rich musical traditions of the region it covers. Even casual world music fans are familiar with the buoyant sounds of Senegalese singing sensations like Youssou N'Dour and Baaba Maal, while others like Cheikh Lo and Mansour Deck have achieved only slightly lesser international recognition.

Music of Senegal – Senegals music is best known abroad due to the popularity of mbalax, a development of Serer sabar drumming popularized by Youssou NDour. During the colonial ages Senegal was colonized by France and many, though not all, post-independence, the philosophy of negritude arose, which espoused the idea that the griot traditions of Senegal were as valid, classical and meaningful as French classical music. Christgau has said that Miles Davis 1960 album Sketches of Spain initiated in him one phase of the disillusionment with jazz that resulted in my return to rock and he was deeply influenced by New Journalism writers such as Gay Talese and Tom Wolfe. My ambitions when I went into journalism were always, to an extent, literary, Christgau initially wrote short stories, before giving up fiction in 1964 to become a sportswriter, and later, a police reporter for the Newark Star-Ledger.

Also includes a bonus data track with information from Rough Guides on travel and the music of Senegal and Gambia. Mac & PC compatible. Produced by World Music Network in association with Rough Guides, NCOS and New Internationalists.

Senegal and Gambia, their close relationship being both geographical and cultural, have been at the forefront of this virtuosity.
