Comfort and Joy is a soundtrack album by British singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Knopfler, released in 1984 by Vertigo Records. The album contains music composed for the 1984 film Comfort and Joy, written and directed by Bill Forsyth. Although the album consists of only three original pieces written for the film, additional songs from the Dire Straits album Love Over Gold were used throughout the film

After Dire Straits’ fourth album was released, Knopfler heard the criticism and began to agree. I was sitting in a bar once and unfortunately ‘Telegraph Road’ was playing and I was sitting there thinking, F--, it sounds like this big lifeless thing. All this work had gone into it and it doesn’t sound like it’s got any life in it somehow, Knopfler said in 1995. And then straight after that came ‘Rave On’ by Buddy Holly. Yet he discovered that his music had gotten so far away from the raw aesthetic of those records. As an almost immediate response to Dire Straits’ most recent material, Knopfler and company went back into the studio less than two weeks after Love Over Gold hit stores. I wanted to do something that just took a day, or took as long as it took to play it, he admitted, and that's when I went and did an EP with the group that just took a day to record and it sounds like it – that's all it was.

The album cover artwork was adapted from a section of a painting by Brett Whiteley titled Alchemy 1974. Alchemy is a hypothetical process once believed to turn ordinary elements into gold. The image of a guitar with lips held by a hand was added for the album design. The music changes to the instrumental "Stargazer", from the film Local Hero, over external shots of a sold-out Hammersmith Odeon. The scene switches to the inside of the venue as Dire Straits are announced and walk onstage for the concert. A Limelight Films Production.
