Although Tara Jane O'Neil has an impressive track record from being in bands such as the defunct post-rock outfit Rodan, Retsin, and the King Cobra, it is as a solo artist where she really shines. Her fifth solo album, A WAYS AWAY, is a poignant demonstration of minimalism, carried mainly by O'Neil's understated, ethereal vocals and the sparse instrumentation. 1 Dig In Tara Jane O'Neil 5:15. 2 In Tall Grass Tara Jane O'Neil 2:45. 3 Drowning Tara Jane O'Neil 3:39. 4 A New Binding Tara Jane O'Neil 3:35

Tara Jane O’Neil might not be the most instantly recognisable name in al. ock, but she’s been involved in some of the most inventive US indie created in its late-’90s/early-’00s halcyon days. The Portland native has helped define the American South’s post-‘Spiderland’ musical identity in the shape of her work with June Of 44 and The Grifters as well as Low and Sebadoh. So it’s no surprise that on her seventh album she’s combined lo-fi elements of math, post-rock, bucolic folk and ambience to create an album of unique, dusky atmospherics
Tara Jane O’Neil’s self-titled album is a work of intimacy, fragility, subtlety and delicacy. There are no fireworks here, no grand arrangements, no heart-wrenching symphonies. Just beauty of toned-down folk music. Guitar, wonderful melodies, late-night tunes, and her voice. It’s a straightforward piece of ethereal charm. Very personal, very fragile, tender and stirring. A Ways Away, O'Neil's fifth solo album and first on the K imprint, draws together her considerable experience as a producer, singer, and songwriter in a fleetingly beautiful 36 minutes that washes over the listener in an introspective haze. There's a characteristic tone that runs through all of her albums- an elastic guitar reverb that stretches to give a delicate puff to her songs, drums that rarely go beyond a gentle grounding pitter-patter and, of course, the haunting lull of her voice, which beckons the listener into her world with mellow grace.
