Her latest recording, In the Moment: Live in Concert (Blue Note), is no exception. The album, recorded this year at a Los Angeles sound stage before about 400 fans and released July 18, features an array of songs that trace the singer's footsteps from her early days with Sergio Mendes ("Bridges") to her most recent creation, "The Best Times (Grandma's Song)" (RealAudio excerpt).

In 2002, Dianne Reeves became the first creative chair for jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. And of course, she continues to record and to perform-touring around the world several times a year. And now she’s a NEA Jazz Master. Dianne Reeves: Woo, that is a very long, amazing table of masterful people that I get to sit with, and it’s extraordinary, because the Jazz Masters past are the reason that I’m here today, because they poured into me, they made music that, you know, I could sit and listen to for hours. Jo Reed: Your 2013 album Beautiful Life won a Grammy Award and the collaborators of young talent that you brought on to that project is extraordinary. Dianne Reeves: Well, I have to thank Terri Lyne Carrington, because she’s pretty extraordinary.

Reeves says she looked at the album as a way of connecting with a legend who's been a strong, positive influence on her. It's a celebration of a great, great jazz artist - Sarah Vaughan, she says from her home in Denver, and an opportunity for me to pay tribute to someone who, in the very beginning of my career, through her music, really opened doors for me artistically in terms of the possibilities of voice and expression. We did Bridges and we did the live record, In the Moment. While doing that, her head was into the string recording and arrangements were being done. Duke has worked with many top-flight artists through the years, including Al Jarreau, Jeffrey Osborne and Rachelle Ferrell.
