Beethoven: Piano Concerto N. in G, O. 8 - 1. Allegro moderato - Sir Colin Davis & BBC Symphony Orchestra & Stephen Kovacevich. Set track as current obsession. Beethoven: Piano Concerto N. 8 - 2. Andante con moto - Sir Colin Davis & BBC Symphony Orchestra & Stephen Kovacevich.
The performances of Beethoven's first four piano concertos by Kovacevich and the BBC Symphony Orchestra with Sir Colin Davis conducting were made in the early 1970s. The sound is very good-sharply focused and full-bodied. The Romances (performed by Arthur Grumiaux and the Royal Concertgebouw with Bernard Haitink conducting) are from 1960, with less-sharp but very good sound. Stephen Kovacevich's survey of the 5 Beethoven concertos has been a staple item in the Philips catalogue for years. They are the sort of performance that is regularly referred back to as a benchmark issue. The following remarks apply to the four concertos included in this coupling.

Stephen Kovacevich, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sir Colin Davis Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 4. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Stephen Kovacevich (b. 1940) is an American pianist and conductor who currently lives in Hampstead Village, London. He was born in California and changed his name to Stephen Bishop (3) when his mother remarried. To avoid confusion with the singer-songwriter and guitarist Stephen Bishop, the pianist started performing as Bishop-Kovacevich in the mid-seventies.
The Piano Concerto No. 5 in E♭ major, Op. 73, by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the Emperor Concerto, was his last completed piano concerto. It was written between 1809 and 1811 in Vienna, and was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf, Beethoven's patron and pupil. The first performance took place on 13 January 1811 at the Palace of Prince Joseph Lobkowitz in Vienna, with Archduke Rudolf as the soloist, followed by a public concert on 28 November 1811 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig under conductor Johann Philipp Christian Schulz, the soloist being Friedrich Schneider. In the early 1930s Artur Schnabel recorded all five Beethoven concertos under Sir Malcolm Sargent and the London Symphony Orchestra. Edwin Fischer recorded it with Karl Böhm in 1939 and Wilhelm Furtwängler in 1951.
Stephen Kovacevich (or Bishop-Kovacevich. if you prefer) appeals as 1 of those pianists whose playing is rather forthright & precise, giving us here a rather lyrical presentation of the concerti full of grace & good demeanor. A little on the light side compared to those who pound out their Beethovens some would think. Personnel: Stephen Kovacevich BBC Symphony Orchestra Sir Colin Davis.
