Locust Abortion Technician, released in March 1987, was the epitome of this. It impacted like a whale on a beach, exploded by the deadly build up of its internal gases. This, right here, in every right head, was the state of rock. The routes to the rehabilitation of old school metal, decried for so long by post-punk were many and varied but Locust Abortion Technician was undoubtedly one of the gateways for this, and many other things. You could say also it helped pave the way for grunge, a more codified, earnest and less waywardly colourful take on the ideas belched out here but then, way-paving isn't always the point, nor the ways yet clear. Locust Abortion Technician was released 25 years ago. Yet in many ways, it feels as yet unborn. Thanks to Richard Sanderson and Ramon Mayor.
During the 1980s the Butthole Surfers represented the further extremes of the Indie Rock underground. Where other bands attempted to finesse their ‘60s influences or subtly spike their punk credentials, the Butthole Surfers looked to obliterate whatever genre they tackled. The Texas combo would take the basic premise of psychedelia and twist it into a true LSD trip, treating sound as something to be put through a funhouse mirror until only the distortions remained

Locust Abortion Technician. The aural equivalent of a nightmarish acid trip and arguably the band's best album (or worst, depending on your point of view), Locust Abortion Technician tops the psychedelic, artsy sonic experimentation of Rembrandt Pussyhorse while keeping one foot planted firmly in the gutter. The record veers from heavy Sabbath sludge (even parodying that band on "Sweat Loaf") to grungy noise rock to progressive guitar and tape effects to almost folky numbers in one big, gloriously schizophrenic mess.
Locust Abortion Technician is everywhere. This album is rock music fused together with blues, metal, psycho tape recordings, african music, psychadelic, and a differnt vocal delivery on every song. When I say weird I mean listening to this album is very unsettling, and spooky. You cannot compare the Butthole surfers to any other band, it's that weird. The only rule that the Butthole surfers have is that all of there songs have to be weird. None of these songs sound the same so the album can be replayed over and over again. Locust Abortion Technician is crazy, it can sometimes even be a scary experience because all of these songs have a very haunting and sometimes an even hellish feel to them. Once again most of these songs are hard rock tunes mixed in with some other weird genre, this album is not normal and is as far away from mainstream music as possible.
Locust Abortion Technician is the third full-length studio album by American experimental rock band Butthole Surfers, released in March 1987. All songs were written and produced by Butthole Surfers, except for Kuntz, which used a sample of Klua Duang, a song performed by the Thai artists Phloen Phromdaen and Kong Katkamngae. Kurt Cobain listed it in his top 50 albums of all time
