Concerto for Sitar & Orchestra is a studio album by Indian musician and composer Ravi Shankar with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) conducted by André Previn. It was premiered at London's Royal Festival Hall on 28 January 1971, and subsequently released in Britain and America. Shankar began composing the work, his first concerto, after receiving a commission from the LSO in mid November 1970.
By far the most famous of all sitar players, Ravi Shankar has long been a beacon of light for Indian music worldwide. SOUND OF THE SITAR is made up of four compositions. The first, "Raga Malkauns: Alap" is a slow, reflective piece. According to Shankar, the section of a raga known as the Alap is difficult to play because it is an invocation, a prayer meant to be performed with great humility. The second piece is, "Raga Malkauns: Jo. The Jor section of a raga is based on a rhythmic pulse and does not a have a strict rhythmic time cycle like the Alap.

Ravi Shankar married her mother later in 1989. Anoushka Shankar is also a sitar player and she was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 2003. He was nominated for an Oscar for the film Gandhi. Ravi Shankar has composed music for a number of films, most notably for Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy and Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi. Ravi Shankar is considered one of the top sitar players of the twentieth century. He has won three Grammy Awards.
