An RCA Quadradisc record. The third major format for four-channel vinyl LPs, known as CD-4 or Quadradisc, was devised by the Japanese JVC Corporation along with its United States counterpart RCA Records. This quadraphonic format was first marketed in the United States in May 1972 The existing matrix formats were tested first. For standard two-channel SQ Matrix broadcasts, CBS recommended that an optional pilot-tone be placed at 19 kHz in quadrature to the regular pilot-tone to indicate SQ encoded signals and activate the listener's logic decoder.

By contrast, a standard "conical" or cone shape stylus has less contact area with the record groove. CD-4 playback in 4 channels also requires a specialized CD-4 demodulator. Such demodulators have not been sold commercially since the 1970s CD-4 encoded records were also compatible with conventional two-channel stereo playback systems. An RCA Quadradisc recording. The color fringes around the reflections are caused by the ultrasonic signal that contains the difference information used to separate the four channels. Simply put, CD-4 consists of four recorded signals (LF, LB, RB, RF) using a coding matrix similar to FM broadcast stereo multiplexing.

A golden "Quadradisc" sticker was affixed to these "stereo" jackets, and continued to be used on the properly labeled later jackets. RCA was so sure that the compatible onic CD-4 album would become the standard for all vinyl product that they started an entirely new numbering scheme that began with the very next CD-4 release: APD1-0001, which was Hugo Montenegro's "Love Theme from the Godfather". From the back liner...
"This is a most unusual recording. Side 1 is produced via the CD-4 discrete 4 channel system and Side 2 is encoded and produced through the SQ matrix system. We believe that as of this date it is the only recording in the world which has been produced under these conditions and we do hope that it will prove to be entertaining as well as helpful in setting up your equipment and in demonstrating the different methods of 4 channel production."

Yeah it's Enoch Light and His Orchestra... but get a load of the rainbow iridescence this thing can put off... The grooves of the test side of this record under the correct lighting conditions are like the mosaic of a monkey with a huge smile on it's face. The non test side doesn't have the iridescence... but if you get this, a clean vinyl version is worth it. Incidental fractal rainbow awesomeness. The only record I've seen to compare with this one is the "COOK (RIAA) Series 302". This one is more common and cheaper.
