Writhing Squares have been conjuring up cosmic slop from the Philadelphia underground for a few years now, mixing growling bass, motorik synthesis, and skronking sax into a heady brew of punk-laced progressive R’n’R. The duo of Daniel Provenzano (Purling Hiss, Spacin, Rosali & the Middlemen) & Kevin Nickles (Ecstatic Vision, Taiwan Housing Project) emerged in 2015 with their self-released Gemini Blues 7-inch, following it up the next year with their debut album In The Void Above for the renowned Siltbreeze imprint. The Writhing Squares are Kevin Nickles and Daniel Provenzano. Two piece psych explorations constructed out of bass, sax, drum machine and a few more things.
Welcoming a heavy psychedelic punk breeze from Philadelphia today on the show; the Writhing Squares are a bass and sax-slash-synth duo made up of fellows who have collaborated in such heady combos as Purling Hiss, Ecstatic Vision, and Spacin'. They just issued a new 7" single and have a split cassette out with the band Igneous Eyes.
After a few early cassette and CD-R releases, the band pressed up their first vinyl offering in 2015 with the "Gemini Blues" b/w "Streetlight Nightmare" 7". They were playing out frequently on the East Coast and working on new material often. In 2016, debut full-length In the Void Above arrived on legendary noise-rock label Siltbreeze and the band embarked on a national tour in support of the album. In early 2019, they returned with second album Out of the Ether, released this time with Chicago label Trouble in Mind.
