The Kicker is the first album by jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson released on the Milestone label. Joe Henderson, Album. In Pursuit of Blackness/Black Is the Color. Other albums by Joe Henderson. Joe Henderson 22//1999. In 1999, Milestone released In Pursuit of Blackness/Black Is the Color, which contained two complete albums - In Pursuit of Blackness (1971, originally released on Milestone) and Black Is the Color (1972, originally released on Milestone) - by Joe Henderson on one compact disc.

Tetragon, Joe Henderson's second Milestone recording, features the great tenor with two separate rhythm sections: Kenny Barron or Don Friedman on piano, bassist Ron Carter and either Louis Hayes or Jack DeJohnette on drums. Highlights of this LP include the title track, "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Invitation. In Pursuit of Blackness, the other LP on this two-fer set, features the great tenor with two very different groups. Invitation" and "Gazelle" are taken from the same live sessions that resulted in his previous album If You're.

Joe Henderson (April 24, 1937 – June 30, 2001) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. In a career spanning more than four decades, Henderson played with many of the leading American players of his day and recorded for several prominent labels, including Blue Note. Song and album titles such as Power to the People, In Pursuit of Blackness, and Black Narcissus reflected his growing political awareness and social consciousness, although the last album was named after the Powell and Pressburger film of 1947. After a brief association with Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1971, Henderson moved to San Francisco and added teaching to his résumé. Though he occasionally worked with Echoes of an Era, the Griffith Park Band and Chick Corea, Henderson remained primarily a leader throughout the 1980s.

Label: Milestone (MCD-47080-2) In Pursuit Of Blackness (1971). Although the album is rhythm-heavy, it was recorded a couple years before Henderson's funk cloud would really thicken - Joe was still swinging here ("Invitation"), which ain't so bad. Still, despite the obvious highlights, this undersold gem is a must-listen if only to check "Gazelle" (recorded live) and hear a head-nodding bassline from Ron McClure backing Henderson and Woody Shaw at their fieriest. For a short period tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson made extensive use of overdubbing.

In Pursuit of Blackness is an album by American saxophonist Joe Henderson, released in 1971 on Milestone. It features three tracks recorded in studio in 1971 and two tracks recorded live at the legendary Lighthouse Café in 1970. All pieces by Joe Henderson, unless otherwise noted. No Me Esqueca" - 7:08. Invitation" (Bronisław Kaper) - 7:34. A Shade of Jade" - 7:45. Mind Over Matter" - 13:19. Joe Henderson - tenor sax.

On Invitation, the trumpet solo is hardly audible, I wonder if there is the same problem on the US or UK press. Thank you.
