The inveterate t was among the first to release recordings as part of the Nonesuch Explorer Series, which presented indigenous music from around the world, in the late 1960s. His first recording in the series, Music from the Morning of the World, featuring field recordings from Bali, was inducted into the National Recording Registry of "culturally significant" sound recordings in 2008. Here, the musician, producer, and writer Brian Cullman offers a remembrance. An overview of all of the Explorer Series albums from Indonesia and featuring an assortment of musics from throughout the region, these 15 tracks illuminate one of the world’s richest sources of musical creativity in all its bracing variety.

It even spun off an imprint, Nonesuch Explorer Series, specializing in world music. Elektra released albums by Love, the Doors, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Bread, Carly Simon, the Lovin' Spoonful, Tim Buckley, and even Eric Clapton & Powerhouse, which not only cemented its reputation as a top label for a variety of music, but also helped to shape and define popular music as a whole  . Released in the UK last year and finally making it to the States, the set includes all the artists you'd expect, as well as a generous serving of lesser-known signees who make the set seem like one great, new discovery (Judy Henske, Pat Kilroy) after another (Eclection, Earth Opera).

Excerpts from several Nonesuch Explorer recordings were later included on the two Voyager Golden Discs which were sent into deep space in 1977 aboard the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space probes.

Featured New Releases. Advanced ch/Musician.
