Smile (stylized as SMiLE) is an unfinished album by American rock band the Beach Boys that was projected to follow their 11th studio album, Pet Sounds (1966). After bandleader and principal songwriter Brian Wilson abandoned over fifty hours of music recorded over a ten-month period with outside lyricist Van Dyke Parks, the band substituted its release with Smiley Smile (1967), an album containing stripped-down remakes of some Smile material.
Released October 28, 2011. 1. Our Prayer Lyrics. SMiLE is the greatest American pop album never heard and possesses perhaps the greatest legend of any American album. Its non-existence has been the obsession of the band’s fans for a half-century. The following tracklist is an admittedly incomplete list of the recordings on Sessions.
20/20 is the 15th studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on February 10, 1969. The LP was named for being their 20th overall album release. Much of it consists of outtakes from earlier albums. It reached number 3 on UK record charts and number 68 in the US. Brian Wilson was absent during most of the album's recording after admitting himself into a psychiatric hospital, requiring brothers Carl and Dennis to retrieve several outtakes he had recorded years earlier.
An album called 'Smiley Smile' was issued later that year, but other than a few of the songs and the hint of the title, it had very little to do with his abandoned masterpiece. Over time, a few more of the songs made it onto subsequent Beach Boys albums, albeit in different form, but time marched on. The Beach Boys made more (sometimes great) records, and Brian grew more and more isolated. Any hope of him ever reaching for such bold creative ground again was long buried. While the tapes gathered dust, over the years the legend of 'Smile' grew. Now, we had heard this story before. At various points from the 70's through the 90's, word would spill out that an official version of 'Smile' was imminent. Each time, nothing happened! So why should we believe this time would be any different?
Nevertheless, beginning in August of 1966, he began planning a new album project, first called Dumb Angel and later SMiLE. Working from the ideas in his head, he and his studio musicians and bandmates recorded continually during late 1966 and early 1967, putting down hours of tape during dozens of sessions. He labored over every note and, more than that, every tone, often asking his musicians or the Beach Boys themselves to revise when the results didn't match his conception of the music going on inside his head.
Only in 2003, when long-time Beach Boys fanatic and tape trader Darian Sahanaja and his band the Wondermints collaborated with Brian on a live version of SMiLE and 2004's Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE album did the lost record assume a definitive shape. But as exciting as that record was at the time, the lure of the originals never went away.
