TYREE GLENN is a swing music artist. Tyree Glenn, who had the unusual double of trombone and vibes, was an important asset at various times to both Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Glenn started out working in territory bands in Virginia, then moved to the West Coast, playing with groups headed by Charlie Echols (1936) and Eddie Barefield. After playing with Ethel Waters and Benny Carter, he became a longtime member of the Cab Calloway Orchestra (1939-1946). Glenn visited Europe with Don Redman's big band (1946).
Trombonist Glenn is reminiscent of Harry "Sweets" Edison. Each line really swings, possesses such direction, and is only made up of the necessary. The silence only adds to the swing; often Jo Jones' bass drum accents seem to finish Glenn's lines, adding to the humor of the music. Personnel: Tyree Glenn: trombone, vibraphone (CD1 CD2 CD2 CD2 CD2 17); Hank Jones: piano; Mary Osborne: guitar; Tommy Potter: bass; Jo Jones: drums; Harold Shorty Baker: trumpet (CD1 CD1 CD1 CD1 CD2 CD2.Milt Hinton: bass (CD2 CD2.Title: Complete Recordings Year Released: 2010 Record Label: Lone Hill Jazz.
