Strange Relations has a curious sound, and it wouldn’t do well to try and fit this band in a mold. The drums feature prominently in the music, which is a gentle yet persistent alternative/ indie rock. The bass line combines well with the persistent drumming, with the latter actually performed by the band’s vocalist, Casey Sowa. There are even some inventive synth beats on the album, like on the track called NBE. Thematically, the release feels dark at times, but in an artistic and pleasant fashion.

Strange Relations, made up of Casey Sowa (drums/vocals) and Maro Helgeson (bass/synth), is a great band. The duo have enough command of pop-writing and depth of influence that they could easily skate by on surface pleasures (and those pleasures are for sure there) but they opt for an odder proposition. While focused, Strange Relations touch on a wide array of sounds, from the chiming pipes of "NBE" to the ghostly garage of "Ignore Me," with styles shifting within a single song, consistently zigging when the zag would perhaps be easier.
