Redirected from Coelophysis bauri). Coelophysis (/sɛˈlɒfɪsɪs/ seh-LOF-ih-sis traditionally; /ˌsɛloʊˈfaɪsɪs/ SEL-o-FY-sis or /ˌsiːloʊˈfaɪsɪs/ SEE-lo-FY-sis are heard more commonly in recent decades ) is an extinct genus of coelophysid theropod dinosaur that lived approximately 216 to 196 million years ago during the latter part of the Triassic Period in what is now the southwestern United States and also in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

All known members of Coelophysidae are carnivores It has also been speculated that some species within Coelophysidae, namely Coelophysis bauri, displayed cannibalism, although the fossil evidence behind these claims has been heavily debated (Rinehart et a. 2009; Gay, 2002; Gay, 2010).

Quick Coelophysis Facts. Coelophysis had hollow bones. Their name means hollow form. Coelophysis is a small dinosaur that lived approximately 200 million years ago in the Late Triassic Period. It was originally discovered in 1881 by David Baldwin. 8 years later-in 1889-it would get its official name from Edward Cope. He named it Coelophysis-which means hollow form –because this dinosaur had hollow bones. This dinosaur was about 9 feet long, 3 feet high and weighed about 100 pounds at most. It’s hollow bone structure made it light and agile, a trait it needed to avoid some of the predators of the day.

This article contains information taken from the (removed) Jurassic Park Institute site. Coelophysis is a very well known early dinosaur as scientists have discovered hundreds of skeletons of this meat-eater. It is the oldest dinosaur known in North America, living around 216 to 203 million years ago, during the Late Triassic Period. It was a swift hunter that seemed to eat almost anything it could catch.
