In an all too small discography, Freddie Redd's Shades of Redd is without a doubt his crowning achievement. Completed after a successful stint composing music for the stage play The Connection, Redd wrote music specifically geared for his two formidable front line saxophonists - emerging alto giant Jackie McLean and the unsung hero of the tenor, Tina Brooks. Shades of Redd, his zenith as a jazz musician, would be a wonderful addition to any collection, and shows that the lesser known musicians have plenty of music to play, in addition to a unique perspective aside from the giants of this music.

Freddie Redd himself is a jazz mystery, appearing on the scene, then exiting at a peak time for his creativity. He didn't leave many lps behind, but the few out there are terrific. Following his wonderful recording of The Connection, Redd returned to the Blue Note studios for this straight-ahead gem. With Jackie Mclean on the front line, joined by the rarely recorded Tina Brooks, Redd's compositions percolate with catchy melodies and jumpy turns. Many of his titles have a 'show-tune' feel, and the cool comping and bopping keep it all kinetic, until the curtain falls. Shades of Redd is a 1960 session featuring fantastic interplay between tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, ubiquitous bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Louis Hayes, and the leader, pianist Freddie Redd, who penned all seven of the compositions. This is my first exposure to Redd, who plays with a sure hand.
