Richard Bishop is an American composer, guitarist and singer best known for his work with the Sun City Girls. He styles himself Sir Richard Bishop. In 2005, Bishop began performing as a solo artist, playing throughout Europe, Australia, and the United States. He has done extensive touring with Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy), Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, Bill Callahan, and many others.

In 1998, Bishop released his first solo album- the exquisite Salvador Kali- on John Fahey's Revenant label. Containing pieces for solo guitar and piano, the album revealed a delicate lyricism not always evident on the more savage and protean SCG releases such as Valentines from Matahari. Last year, Bishop followed up Kali with a lengthy contribution to Locust's Wooden Guitar collection, which also featured pieces from the kindred guitar spirits of Steffen Basho-Junghans, Jack Rose, and Tetuzi Akiyama. Improvika features an unaccompanied Bishop on a steel-string wooden guitar, and as its title implies his playing here sounds considerably more extemporaneous and free-flowing than on the more composed, stately Salvador Kali. Each of these nine songs is easily digestible portion, with track lengths in the three to eight-minute range.

Richard Bishop, stylized as Sir Richard Bishop, is a guitarist, composer and singer from Phoenix, Arizona. He writes experimental music that changes in flavor from album to album. You’ve reached a fan made page that honors this great man who makes amazing music, music which leaves you wanting more. My name is Robert Dyball and I’m a huge fan of Sir Richard Bishop. I’ve started listening to his records in the early 2000s and haven’t stopped since. My day job is that of an electrician. It wasn’t until 2004 that his second album Improvika was released. In 2006 two albums were released, Fingering the Devil and Elektronika Demonika. Same thing happened in 2007 with While My Guitar Violently Bleeds and Polytheistic Fragments. 2008 was another double release year.

Richard Bishop was born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1960. He is best known for his 26 year involvement with the band Sun City Girls and as an experimental solo guitarist whose work often reflects the shadow worlds of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and other points along the Gypsy trail. It was issued under the name of Sir Richard Bishop (the name stuck). The album showcases Bishop's own particular obsessions and roots, drawing from a variety of worldwide sources. Locust Music issued his second record, Improvika (2004), which consisted of nine extemporaneous pieces for solo acoustic guitar. Up next was Fingering the Devil (2006), which was recorded at an impromptu session at London’s Southern Studios on a day off during Bishop's 2005 European tour.

By trade, Sir Richard Bishop is a dealer of rare occult books and fine paper ephemera. However, in the musical cosmos, he has occasion to travel the smoke-filled carnie circuit as 1/3 of the Sun City Girls medicine show. In the twilight hours of a shadow world sensed only by few, Bishop is a dazzling unaccompanied guitarist. Improvika is Bishop’s follow-up to his part on Locust’s celebrated Wooden Guitar collection, and his second full-length release after his debut on John Fahey’s Revenant label. possess a singular grace that deserves to be heard far beyond the confines of underground rock. For some reason I remembered it as being a bit more experimental than SRB's first.

Sir Richard Bishop ‎– Improvika. Label: Locust Music ‎– LOCUST 61. Format: CD, Album. Acoustic Guitar – Sir Richard Bishop. Engineer, Recorded By, Mastered By – Scott Colburn.

Sir Richard Bishop's guitar work harks back to an earlier time, when acoustic guitar virtuosos like Leo Kottke and Robbie Basho reigned supreme. Back then, players rarely sang, but used all of their energies to create original music that would never be confused (as is the case in the early 2000s) with new age music. This skill and seriousness is reflected even on the title of Bishop's Improvika, and deepened by the odd titles - "Gnostic Gem" and "Skull of Sidon" - of individual compositions. Improvika is the type of album guitarists study, wishing they could slow the CD down (as players used to slow down LPs to learn a guitarist's technique); acoustic fans, on the other hand, will be pleased to have a meaningful, full-bodied guitar album.
