Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer sometimes referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.

Ella Fitzgerald’s entire Song Book series of album are an American treasure. They combine her exquisite voice with some of the best songs every composed. Most were written for Broadway shows of the ‘30s and ‘40s by such musical theater geniuses as Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. Richard Rodgers and Larry Hart were among the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, and there could be no finer interpretation of their genius than by the wonderful Ella Fitzgerald. This two disc set is one to treasure, along with the Gershwin and Cole Porter collections. They will continue to bring me pleasure for many years to come.
Album · 1955 · 35 Songs. Ella Fitzgerald, a star of Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series since 1949, seemed to Granz an ideal fit for his new Verve label, so he signed her in 1955, luring her away from Decca in something of a coup. Right away the plan was to position her as a singer with a command of the American pop songbook, on par with a figure like Sinatra. Jazz connoisseurs admired her for her solid swing feel and breakneck scatting, her ability to go head-to-head onstage with the era's great soloists. Porter would be followed by Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, and finally Johnny Mercer in 1964. Most of these writers, save for Porter and Berlin, had lyricist partners (Mercer was primarily known as a lyricist, not a composer).
