While some might decry his directness, to my ears he does not pussy-foot around with excessive rubato (unlike late Arrau): that’s in his favour. He’s here to do a job and do so with urgency, passion and immense power. It’s little or no loss whatsoever to forego Kempff’s arabesques or Brendel the Brainiac when majesty and leonine grunt are recompense as they are here.

Wilhelm Backhaus ('Bachaus' on some record labels) (26 March 1884 – 5 July 1969) was a German pianist and pedagogue. He was particularly well known for his interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin and Brahms. He was also much admired as a chamber musician. Born in Leipzig, Backhaus was the son of a well-known architect. He began learning piano at the age of four with his mother, an amateur pianist.

Backhaus recorded extensively for Decca throughout the 1950s and 1960s and recorded works by Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Schumann. His complete cycle of Beethoven Sonatas occupied him throughout the 1950s and 1960s and is regarded by many as his greatest achievement, and the cycle is justly recognized as one of the great recorded cycles.
