Shadows of the Sun is the seventh studio album by the Norwegian experimental collective Ulver. Produced by Ulver, the album was issued in October 2007 via Jester Records and The End Records. Officially announced on July 13, 2007, Shadows of the Sun received critical acclaim on release, and was described as "dark and tragic", with "soothing electronics and natural percussion".
Shadows of the Sun forgets the debauchery of Blood Inside. It comes back to a composition closer from the spirit of Perdition City, but with some variations, where the influence of Svidd Neger is also palpable (the jazzy touches of Perdition City are there, the aerial saxophone is back, but the neoclassic parts are much more present). So, take these two albums, mix them, and try to imagine what could be the result if they were quieter and more nostalgic. So, how shall be judged this album? Yes, Ulver has created a masterpiece. Ulver remains Ulver, it keeps gathering the same disparate elements with a genius which explains fully why this album is amazingly good instead of being a complete incomprehensible mess. The band composes more than ever for itself and it exposes its soul.
One of the only albums I like falling asleep to. And I mean that in the most positive way. So calm and melancholy. BigPleb June 28th 2019. Eos is why Garm is number 1. Trifolium June 28th 2019. Eos is absolutely among goat Ulver. Such a serene atmosphere on here. garas June 28th 2019. Like Music has annoying lyrics, but otherwise the only Ulver lyrics that have bothered me are Nowhere and I guess Coming Home. Digging: Otoboke Beaver - Itekoma Hits, ? Previous.

Shadows of the Sun" is a very complete album, each track artfully blends into the other in such a perfect way. Its definitely an album that should be consumed whole rather than in parts ( "Eos" the album opener seems to fit rather nicely with the ending track "What Happened?"). Shadows of the Sun" could certainly be a concept album where each song is part of a story (it definitely has that feel to it), but just like other Ulver albums, each song has enough strength and depth to stand alone. Ulver fans (those that have grown accustomed to their ever shifting sound) will embrace "Shadows of the Sun" with open arms, but I think even the casual music lover with find much to enjoy here. Those who favor true ambient music will certainly find affinity with this.
