British singer/songwriter David Gray had already released three overlooked albums by the time White Ladder (and its international breakthrough hit "Babylon") brought his mix of acoustic instruments and electronic samples to the mainstream. Born in Manchester in 1968, Gray relocated to Wales at the age of nine before returning to the northwest to attend the University of Liverpool. Following a move to London, Gray signed to Hut Records in the United Kingdom and Caroline in the United States, releasing the debut single "Birds Without Wings" in 1992. The next year saw the release of his first full-length record, A Century Ends, and Gray's trademark style of fiery vocals countered with folksy, acoustic songcraft began to find an audience, particularly in Ireland.

David Gray (born 13 June 1968) is a British singer-songwriter. Gray released his first album in 1993 and received worldwide attention after the release of White Ladder six years later. It was the first of three UK chart-toppers in six years for Gray, of which the latter two also made the Top 17 in the United States. White Ladder became the fifth best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK. Gray has been nominated for four Brit Awards – twice for Best British Male.
When David Gray initially picked up the phone to talk with Paste recently, there was no better word to describe his tone than "weary. He admitted that he was exhausted from traveling-he took the call in a hotel room in Germany, just one stop of many-but it could have been from any great number of things. David Gray: I deliberated over the title. I always do. It just seemed to say everything I needed to say about this record, really. but also to draw the line, it ends here, and something else starts. You know that news footage of when they found in a hole in the ground? Well, obviously, the first line of my song is, Crouched in a hole like a mud-streaked fugitive. I just had this shot through my mind as I wrote it. It’s not really what the song is about.
White Ladder is the fourth studio album by English folk singer-songwriter David Gray. It was first released in November 1998 through Gray’s own record label, IHT Records, but failed to chart. On 1 May 2000, the album was re-released by Dave Matthews' label ATO Records and debuted at number 69 on the UK Albums Chart, before climbing to number one on 5 August 2001, more than a year later. White Ladder produced five singles, including the hit Babylon, which ignited interest in the album and shot Gray to worldwide fame. White Ladder spent almost three consecutive years in the UK top 100, charting between May 2000 and March 2003. Its total charting time as of 2015 is 175 weeks, making it one of the longest-charting albums in UK chart history. It was massively successful in Ireland, where it spent six consecutive weeks at number one on the Irish Albums Chart and had sold 350,000 copies by 2002.
