Johannes Brahms's Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115 was written in 1891 for the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. It is scored for a clarinet in A with a string quartet. It has a duration of approximately thirty-five minutes. At the time Brahms started composing his Clarinet Quintet, only a few works had been composed for this type of ensemble.

Composed for clarinet and string quartet, 1891. Arranged for viola and string quartet by Brahms, 1891–92. Chamber Music by Johannes Brahms.

Johannes Brahms was a German composer and pianist who wrote symphonies, concerti, chamber music, piano works, and choral compositions. Born in Hamburg, Germany, on May 7, 1833, Brahms was the great master of symphonic and sonata style in the second half of the 19th century. He can be viewed as the protagonist of the Classical tradition of Joseph Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. In 1853 Brahms was introduced to the renowned German composer and music critic Robert Schumann. The two men quickly grew close, with Schumann seeing in his younger friend great hope for the future of music. He dubbed Brahms a genius and praised the "young eagle" publicly in a famous article. For Schumann and eventually Brahms, this new sound was sheer indulgence and negated the genius of composers like Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. In 1854 Schumann fell ill.

We owe the composition of Brahms’ two clarinet sonatas, Clarinet Trio and Clarinet Quintet to Richard Mühlfeld, the great instrumentalist whom Hans von Bülow had introduced to the comp. Johannes Brahms: Opus 120 No. 1 (arranged by: Luciano Berio). Opus 120 No. 1. Previous work: Klavierstücke.

Johannes Brahms’ father was Johann Jakob Brahms while Johannes’ mother was Johanna Henrika Christiane Nissen. Johann Jakob Brahms, like his son, was a musician of the 19th century. Johann was proficient in several instruments, including the French horn and the double bass. Johanna Henrika Christiane Nissen, Johannes’ mother, was a seamstress living in Hamburg. Brahms studied piano with pianist Otto Friedrich Willibald Cossel. Due to his family being poor, Brahms often played in the brothels and dance halls of Hamburg. By the age of eleven, Brahms was composing sonatas for the piano. His compositions would not receive public attention or acclaim until he toured with Eduard Remenyi as an accompanist in the spring of 1853. Joseph Joachim then introduced Robert Schumann to Johannes Brahms via a letter. Brahms then traveled to Dusseldorf to live with the Schumann family.

Four Ballads for Piano. 11. Serenade No. 1 in D Major forLarge Orchestra. 12. Ave Maria for Women's Chorus and Orchestra or Organ. Canons for mixed vocal ensembles a cappella.
