Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka present a versatile and deep journey through the territories of clubland, equally fitting for dancefloors and home listening. They!Live, their first album together, is a collection of Berlin inspired, UK influenced Detroit- and Dub-Techno, UK Funky, Deep House, Tech House tracks all recorded in Berlin between late August and early November 2011. You'll find as much depth as you will find uplifting energy on here. There is as much darkness as light.

UK house producers Doc Daneeka and Benjamin Damage produced "Creeper" around this time last year for 50 Weapons, an eight-minute vehicle for sleek, aerodynamic riffage, an exercise in the supremacy of simplicity. Label heads Modeselektor apparently liked the single so much they commissioned a whole album from the duo and flew them out to Berlin to accomplish the task. The result is They! Live, a lean, confident long-player of stylishly minimal beats rendered in attractive curves and clear, soft tones. As a result, They! Live actually slots in quite well with the narrative strand of drowsy beat music that seems to be dominating the dialogue as of late: "Charlottenburg" has all the hallmarks of a banger, glossy chords, hyperactive rimshots and a kick that skips across the surface like a rock on a lake, but it's all doled out in sluggish shades of grey, not quite.

While both Benjamin Damage and Doc Daneeka entered 2012 with solid track records, it's fair to say that the Welsh duo's debut full-length, They!Live, fa. Technically speaking, Doc Daneeka did put together a pretty stellar podcast for us back in May of 2010, and XLR8R generally doesn't allow artists to have a second go-round, but this collaboration with Benjamin Damage is essentially a brand-new project, even if it does bear both of their names. As for the duo's mix, it finds Benjamin Damage and Doc Daneeka skating along the nebulous territory where so-called "bass music" intersects with classic techno and house sensibilities

Confidence and solidness combine with elegance and delicacy on this stylish bassy techno/house album. Soft and lush female vocals which sound graceful and a bit irresolutely add emotions and sensitivity. There are no highly monotonous or obviously boring tracks, still they don't sound too sweet or cheesy. I like this quality of the release: it sounds highly accessible, not too complex, but simultaneously preserve its dignity and high class, not becoming cheap. Such balance is quite a valuable quality, especially for a contemporary techno/house LP.
