Outcast is the eighth studio album by German thrash metal band Kreator. It was released by . Outcast was also Kreator's first album to feature drummer Jürgen "Ventor" Reil since 1992's Renewal, and the first to feature then-former Coroner guitarist Tommy Vetterli.
This album was different in that it was a little darker and also more restrained. There's still some solid riffs and vocals, however, the mental thrashing had been put on hold, which wasn't a complete disaster by any means. As for the song writing, from their debut album, all the way through to Coma of Souls, Kreator always had interesting lyrics, however, the song writing definitely declined in the '90s, and the lyrics on this album are no exception. There's a lot more simple repetition, where the song title is exclaimed at every opportunity; something Metallica started doing a decade early with "Master! Master!" and "Back to the Front!". It's Kreator style dark metal, I presume. I think that 'Coma of Souls' (1990) song 'People of the Lie' was a step towards to this kind of material. Anyways, let's dive deeper into 'Outcast'.

Kreator abandoned their thrash days on Renewal, and continued it on 1995's Cause For Conflict, both of which were mediocre releases that were never really going anywhere. They had some tracks of not on, but were mainly just snorefests. Whilst Kreator have once again stayed away from the thrash with their 1997 release Outcast, they have created an album that has enough going for it to be considered a fantastic release. Kicking things off right away, we have the dark, haunting song Leave This World Behind. However, it is album closer A Better Tomorrow that really is the best out of the three. This song makes up for any weaker moments throughout the album perfectly, with a full song that never once lets up. Musically, this album really does manage to standout. The riffs are all fun and catchy, but hold a dark atmosphere.

In 1987, Kreator released their third studio album, Terrible Certainty, which is often considered a high-quality Kreator album as the arrangements on the album were more complex and the tempos more varied. The album featured another hit "Behind the Mirror", and the band's popularity continued to grow and a video for "Toxic Trace" was created for MTV play. They managed to find enough time and money (coming from the concerts) to finance another EP, Out of the Dark. Their fourth studio album and debut with Epic (for limited territories) Extreme Aggression, recorded in Los Angeles, became a metal hit in Europe upon its release in 1989; however, the album would not enter the German album charts until 28 years after its release. Continuing the Terrible Certainty formula while showing the band still progressing musically, and with better production by the.
