Originally, a "Christmas carol" referred to a piece of vocal music in carol form whose lyrics centre on the theme of Christmas or the Christmas season. Many traditional Christmas carols focus on the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus, while others celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas that range from 25 December to 5 January.

Re: CHristmas carols in Switzerland? 'O Du Fröhliche' is a popular carol, one that I had never heard until I moved here. I believe it is German, not Swiss, though. Perhaps we aren't in the mood yet to think of Christmas carols just yet. But if you type in Chanson de Noël or Weihnachtslieder into Youtube you'll get a pretty nice choice of famous songs to listen to. The following 2 users would like to thank Sada for this useful post

How Christmas Carols started and what they mean and represent in the customs of Christmas. Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were not Christmas Carols. They were pagan songs, sung at the Winter Solstice celebrations as people danced round stone circles. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, usually taking place around 22nd December. The word Carol actually means dance or a song of praise and joy! Carols used to be written and sung during all four seasons, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has really survived
