Rare (often known as Bowie Rare) was a compilation released by RCA Records to cash in on David Bowie for the 1982 Christmas market. The artist's relations with the company were at a low – Bowie had recorded his last music for RCA with the Baal EP, and had been annoyed by the release of a five-year-old duet with Bing Crosby ("Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy") as a single without his consultation.
Their friendship came via Gerald's brother Dek, who was a co-writer on David's 1967 self-titled debut. Recalling how their friendship began, Gerald said: "In the 1960s, we were all just starting out with our lives, and by 1966, I had a small home, a wife and three small kids. Dek would often use my place to stay before or after gigs. He would often bring by a fellow musician into our home. No one knew that one of the musicians would turn out to be David Bowie

To capture his newly minted pop persona, Bowie enlisted Gerald Fearnley to photograph him in a studio session. It was there that cover from his debut album was shot
