On Wenu Wenu, Syrian singer Omar Souleyman brilliantly blends old-school dabke music with modern influences to create an irresistible amalgam. At the center of it all is Souleyman’s singing, so perfectly enmeshed in the driving feel of dance tunes like "Ya Yumma" and "Warni Warni" that it, too, is difficult to separate from its surroundings. Syrian singer Omar Souleyman’s Wenu Wenu is technically his first proper recording, having been cut in a studio in Brooklyn rather than on site at one of the thousands of weddings he’s performed over the past two decades. Four Tet's Kieran Hebden, who produced, made the wise decision not to try and improve on a sound that doesn’t need fixing. jörk remixer Omar Souleyman is known for urban Syrian dabke dance music. But his hookahbar synths, guitar-hero electric saz runs and blazing digitized hand percussion will probably translate to most Western ravers as EDM-grade belly-dance music. And why not? Singing in Arabic and Kurdish, he pitches R&B woo, invoking camelhair scarves ( Yagbuni ) and Damascus honeymoons (the Arab-world hit Khattaba ) with ferocious vocal fricatives, while producer Kieran Hebdan (Four Tet) sharpens the attacks and decays without diluting the style.

Omar Souleyman – 'Wenu Wenu'. The dance album of 2013 – according to its admittedly slightly biased producer Kieran Hebden – isn’t Jon Hopkins’ ‘Immunity’ or Disclosure’s ‘Settle’. It’s a collection of Middle Eastern folk pop by a 47-year-old Syrian who sings in Arabic and Kurdish and made his name on the local wedding circuit.
Wenu Wenu contains seven selections, clocking in at a little under 40 minutes. Souleyman's fluid, innovative dabke style walks its own loopy tightrope between baladi and shaabi styles and pushes the boundaries to create some new ones. His lyrics are sung poetry that can be understood by Turks, Kurds, and Iraqis, as well as Syrians; Westerners, not so much, but there are translations
