It was the second posthumous album release by his official record company and is mostly composed of recordings Hendrix made in 1969 and 1970 after the breakup of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Despite the cover photo and subtitle Original Motion Picture Sound Track, it does not contain any songs recorded during his concert appearance for the 1971 film Rainbow Bridge.

In my humble opinion this is perhaps the best live album Jimi ever did. The sound is great, the groove is great and this album, recorded only a few months after Live at the Fillmore (on New Years' Eve) really gives us a chance to talk about one aspect of Jimi that is rarely discussed - namely, how well his sidemen performed. Stone Free is the first song of the Fillmore two disc set and five months later Jimi cut the same song with a different drummer on Berkeley

The album features the second - or 10 . show recorded by Hendrix, bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell at Berkeley Community Theatre on Saturday, May 30, 1970. The set is presented in its entirety and in its original sequence. Hendrix had filled the massive, nearby Oakland Coliseum the previous year and could have done so again, but he chose a more intimate theater setting instead. Hendrix was unaware of the turbulence that surrounded the building. He prefaced the concert by asking his audience to "forget about yesterday or tomorrow. This is our own little world tonight. [ Can't get enough Jimi Hendrix?

Further unreleased Hendrix material from 1970 concert. A film, Jimi Plays Berkeley, was cobbled together from Hendrix’s performances and footage of anti-Vietnam protests, while outtakes from these gigs have only emerged fitfully, on shoddy compilations and bootlegs. Live At Berkeley comprises the entire second concert, featuring embryonic versions of new tracks like Straight Ahead and bluesier, looser revisions of hits such as Hey Joe. Only with Machine Gun, however, does he really catch fire and catch the mood. Staggering as this set is, there are still better versions of these tracks elsewhere.
