Four jam tunes from the Blue Note catalog each exceed four minutes in duration, which was a big deal in 1944. There was no stopping a front line composed of Sidney DeParis, Vic Dickenson, and Edmond Hall. Much of the remaining material on this album was recorded by Moses Asch, and issued on LP many years later. Six songs composed by . Handy are sung by his daughter, Katherine Handy, who sounds a bit like Mildred Bailey

The band sides are unmemorable, but the Kathleen Handy sides underline what a fine accompanist Johnson was. "Yellow Dog Blues" has wonderful piano, alive to every nuance of the song. Kathleen Handy's voice, however, is an acquired taste, and she sings the . Handy lyrics as published, some very un-blueslike stanzas included. Johnson's "Blue Moods" solos are magnificent (although Blue Moods 2 is simply a cut version of "Blue Moods - Sex").

James P. Johnson (James Price Johnson, also known as Jimmy Johnson; February 1, 1894 – November 17, 1955) was an American pianist and composer.

James Price Johnson (February 1, 1894 – November 17, 1955) was an American pianist and composer. A pioneer of the stride style of jazz piano, he was one of the most important pianists who bridged the ragtime and jazz eras, and, with Jelly Roll Morton, one of the two most important catalysts in the evolution of ragtime piano into jazz. As such, he was a model for Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, and Fats Waller.
