The second full-length album from Australian singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin, Crushing embodies every possible meaning of its title word. It’s an album formed from sheer intensity of feeling, an in-the-moment narrative of heartbreak and infatuation. And with her storytelling centered on bodies and crossed boundaries and smothering closeness, Crushing reveals how our physical experience of the world shapes and sometimes distorts our inner lives.
Crushing is the second studio album by Australian musician Julia Jacklin. It was released in February 2019 under Polyvinyl Record C. Transgressive Records and Liberation Records.
Jacklin is sitting in a coffee shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with a bottle of sparkling water, a few weeks after the release of her intimate, introspective new album, Crushing. She adds that it’s a mistake to assume that all her songs are strictly autobiographical: I don’t like talking about whether things are real or not. Either way, the songs speak for themselves. On the opening track, Body, Jacklin repeats, I guess it’s just my life, and it’s just my body over and over in a sea of sadness.
Genre: Singer-Songwriter. A break-up album may be nothing new, but in her hands, ‘Crushing’ becomes something fresh and captivating, simple songs of a complicated human life that are at times heart-rending, yet ultimately triumphant in spirit.
Julia Jacklin: 'I get sick of the fact that whenever a woman speaks about their experiences, it’s labelled political and radical'. Following the release of her new album Crushing, the Australian singer-songwriter tells Alexandra Pollard about her crisis of confidence on the brink of its release, how she deals with sexism and ageism, and why she refused to call her album Body. Thursday 4 April 2019 12:22. Oh man, this industry’s so full of gaslighting. Julia Jacklin, sitting on the sofa of a Brighton hotel, is talking about a particular type of sexist manipulation. I’ve had quite a few pretty traumatic instances in my life, she continues, where I’ve recognised some sexist, problematic behaviour, but I’m surrounded by other men, who’ve rebuffed me when I point it out: ‘No, no, you’re an intense person if you think that’s what this i.
The dual senses of that word hang heavy in the title of this Sydney singer-songwriter’s second album, which ruminates on infatuations turned millstones over haunted Americana and garage rock. So yes: a barrel of laughs. But truly, in among the scab- and finger-picking and lines that creep into your ear and needle ( Do you still have that photograph? Would you use it to hurt me? Jacklin wonders among the watercolour chord progressions of Body) are indeed blasts of bitter humour
