Elvira" is a song written and originally performed by Dallas Frazier in 1966. Though a minor hit for Frazier at the time of release, the song became a bigger and much more famous country and pop hit by The Oak Ridge Boys in 1981. Elvira" is now considered one of the Oak Ridge Boys' signature songs. Songwriter Dallas Frazier wrote "Elvira" in 1966 and included it as the title track of an album he released that year

Years later, The Oak Ridge boys recorded it and of course it was a big hit. I have thought many times about how me stopping in time at that red light was a very fateful event in so many lives. Kenny Rogers recorded this in 1970, and his version has appeared on several of his greatest hits compilations. The Oak Ridge Boys version featured distinctive bass vocals by Richard Sterban, and became a rare country song to cross over to the pop charts. More songs from The Oak Ridge Boys. More songs with girls' names in the title. More songs inspired by places.

There's a reason why the Oak Ridge Boys' 1981 smash hit "Elvira" sounds like it's a throwback to the pre-Beatles days of rock & roll, when pop songs were flavored with doo wop-styled harmonies: it was written by Dallas Frazier, the man who penned such early rock & roll hits as the Hollywood Argyles' "Alley Oop," plus such country novelty hits. as George Jones' "I'm a People. As a matter of fact, Frazier recorded the song in 1966 for his album, Elvira.
