Unknown Pleasures is the debut studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 15 June 1979 by Factory Records. The album was recorded and mixed over three successive weekends at Stockport's Strawberry Studios in April 1979, and was produced by Martin Hannett, who incorporated a number of unconventional production techniques into the group's sound. The cover artwork was designed by artist Peter Saville, using a data plot of signals from a radio pulsar.

Released June 15, 1979. Unknown Pleasures Tracklist. About Unknown Pleasures. One of the finest post-punk albums ever crafted. With light shifting disco beats wedded to Ian Curtis' wrenching baritone equipped lustful basslines and awe-inspiring guitar riffs, matched with the angst and depression of 1970s Manchester. And with subject matters stretching from Hitler to epileptic victims, horrifying insect landscapes and shadowed philosophical love affairs. Unknown Pleasures Q&A.
Actually, Joy Division didn’t make all that much music. The group’s earliest work – demo tapes recorded under the name Warsaw and a debut EP, Ideal for Living (some of which will appear in a forthcoming import album) – was a worthy but hardly exceptional example of a band attempting to forge art-rock influences (mostly David Bowie, Brian Eno and Roxy Music) and primitivist archetypes (some Sex Pistols, a little Who) into.
Joy Division, like many of their Manchester peers, were inspired by the DIY anti-ethos of the Sex Pistols; they just didn't know what to do with it at first. So, shaped and prodded by notorious provocateur Hannett (who would turn the heat in the studio down low enough for everyone to see their breath), the group embraced space, ambience, and an imposing austerity.
