Steve Reich explains the motivation behind his deceptively challenging flamenco-inspired canon, Clapping Music. We went out into the foggy Belgian night and started clapping at each other, and a lightbulb just went on in my head - what if there's a power failure in a gig, what if everything goes off? And that was it: "This is it, EUREKA!", I got the inspiration to write Clapping music.

Without Steve Reich's rhythms, pulses and phasing, contemporary culture would be a much poorer place, writes Tom Service. It's rare that one says this about a contemporary composer, but it's become too easy to take Steve Reich for granted. Of course, that's a sign of just how influential his music has been, the way it has drawn on everything from African drumming to concept art, and how it has influenced generations of pop, jazz and classical musicians over the last half-century.
Come Out is a 1966 piece by American composer Steve Reich. The Harlem Six were six black youths arrested for a murder of Margit Sugar, a Hungarian refugee, in Harlem in the weeks following the Little Fruit Stand Riot of 1964. Only one of the six was responsible while the lead witness is generally considered the actual perpetrator
