Opera by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Scene at the Graz Opera in 2015. When Die tote Stadt had its premiere on December 4, 1920, Korngold was just 23 years old with two short one-act operas, Der Ring des Polykrates and Violanta, already to his name. The success of these earlier works was so great that Die tote Stadt was subject to a fierce competition among German theatres for the right to the world premiere. 1975: RCA Victor, with Carol Neblett, René Kollo, Hermann Prey, and Benjamin Luxon, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf (RCA Victor CD Recorded Bavarian Radio Concert Hall, Munich June 1975. 1983: Deutsche Oper Berlin, with James King, Karan Armstrong, and William Murray, conducted by Heinrich Hollreiser, and directed by Götz Friedrich (DVD: Arthaus Musik 101 656).

Korngold: Die Tote Stadt O. 2. Leinsdorf, in his posthumously published book "Erich Leinsdorf on Music" writes about the difficulty Rene Kollo had with the music (both leads have many extended passages written in a very high tessitura). When the recording was being made, Kollo was performing Parsifal (in Bayreuth) and alternating between those performances and recording sessions in Munich. RCA agreed to have Leinsdorf and the orchestra record the problematic passages without Kollo so that Kollo could come to the RCA studio in London months later when his voice was more primed for the high passages in "Die Tote Stadt" and record them over the orchestra track when I later heard the finished product I marveled at everybody's skill".

Opera by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

Erich Leinsdorf conducting the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Chorus and Boys Choir; Rene Kollo, Carol Neblett, Herman Prey. The work itself is ravishingly lyrical and filled with haunting melodies, and the cast, conductor, and orchestra bring this off with unexpected (and unparalleled) success.
