To call the one-man project Blank Dogs prolific is a bit of an understatement. Although Blank Dogs releases have been of the small-potatoes variety (being issued on a number of small independent labels), they have been numerous and critically well received: 2007 saw a number of the project’s releases on critical best-of lists, and more was sure to come in 2008, as Blank Dogs had prepared a slate of a dozen releases for that. This rather unbelievable list included some 7 EPs, an untitled full-length, and a handful of singles anthologies on labels like Troubleman, Slowboy, and 4:4:2

As Blank Dogs, Mike Sniper has spent the past couple of years shelling out one scrap of lo-fi crust and psych filth after the next for banners such as Sacred Bones, Sweet Rot, Woodsist, and his own Captured Tracks imprint. His latest for the In the Red label, Under and Under, features more of the same from the dexterous New Yorker, with a couple of cameos from Crystal Stilts and Vivian Girls popping up throughout the album

Album · 2009 · 15 Songs. Like the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Blank Dogs’ is a storeplace of things better kept out of the sunlight. In this case, it’s a treasure trove of musical spirits of the past, everything from brooding post-punk to goth to noise rock, all of the black-is-best variety. After a couple of years of anonymity and a torrent of releases, Mike Sniper emerged from the shadows of his nom de plume and his Brooklyn cave, releasing Under and Under for In the Red Records - a perfect pairing
Blank Dogs' backstory was kept a secret for the early stages of his career, and his enigmatic stature filled the curiosity of bloggers and magazine columnists, who became infatuated with the idea of a mysterious persona possessed by a seemingly inexhaustible creative spirit. Of course he couldn't keep up the hidden identity charade forever, but Mike Sniper (probably not his real surname), the meek wizard behind the Blank Dogs curtain, maintained his anonymity for the better part of two years by hiding his face in wraps and bandages for press shots
It's a bold step forward, but it doesn't come at the expense of the group's innate wanderlust. If anything, it's helped clarify its eclectic sound. On previous records, the distended futuristic funk moves of "Insides" might have sounded oddly similar to the twee-pop of "Northern Islands" or the instrumental space-age voyage taken by "Elevens"
