Japanese jazz is jazz played by Japanese musicians and connected to Japan or Japanese culture. The term often refers to the history of jazz in Japan, which has the largest proportion of jazz fans in the world, according to some estimates. Attempts at fusing jazz with Japanese culture in the United States are commonly termed Asian-American jazz.

It's incredible to imagine that in the city of Arkhangelsk, there was a fantastic jazz band that have a musical identity as strong as the Art Ensemble Of Chicago or Sun Ra for exemple. Arkhangelsk is a town in the far north of Russia so for our western vision this band might be a kind of miracle. But considering the high level of musical studies in the Eastern countries it is not something exceptional. Unfortunately the discography of the Jazz Group Arkhangelsk is very small, two lp on Leo records, one or two tracks on some box set also on Leo and one album titled "portrait", a concert in England. This live comes from the same tour and it is a total treasure. One very long improvisation that cross different moods, from fiery moments to more mysterious and cosmic moments. This album should really be re-pressed because in my opinion it is in the top 20 of the best avant garde albums of all times.
